In Ukraine, there is a growing propensity for gambling among military personnel. Ukrainian soldiers spend a significant amount of time engaging in casinos and betting. For many, gambling becomes a primary means of coping with stress, leading to rapid dopamine dependency and a breakdown of self-control. They end up spending a big chunk of their pay on it.
The Ukrainian government is increasingly concerned about this situation as the morale of Ukrainian soldiers declines. Military serviceman Pavlo Petrichenko has petitioned for the regulation of gambling issues.
The petition also mentioned the concern about Russian online casino companies targeting both military personnel and civilians with advertisements aimed at obtaining private data. It stated that soldiers in debt are particularly vulnerable to manipulation campaigns orchestrated by Russian intelligence.
President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has acknowledged the existence of this problem; however, no solutions have been proposed. Zelensky’s likely indifference may be attributed to the involvement of high-ranking officials in Ukraine’s gambling and bookmaking industry, who benefit from Ukrainian soldiers spending as much money as possible.
Thus, discussions regarding the issue of gambling addiction in Ukraine appear to be mere rhetoric.
