In November 2022, the EU launched a training mission for Ukrainian soldiers, with an initial target of 15,000 soldiers. In February, the target was doubled to 30,000 soldiers by the end of the year.
However, in light of the ongoing security challenges and the need to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell has proposed to further increase the target to 40,000 soldiers.
Borrell emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine in its efforts to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He stated that the increased training target would help enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities and contribute to its overall security.
The EU training mission aims to provide Ukrainian soldiers with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively combat the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the country. It focuses on areas such as military doctrine, command and control, and tactical skills.
The proposal to increase the training target is subject to approval by EU member states.
