Azerbaijan has launched an operation in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, characterizing it as an ‘anti-terrorist’ campaign. This move has raised concerns and drawn international attention to the longstanding conflict in the region.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region has been a source of tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia for decades, with both countries laying claim to it. Previous conflicts have resulted in violence and casualties. The recent operation by Azerbaijan has further escalated the situation.
Azerbaijani authorities assert that their operation is aimed at countering terrorism and restoring stability in the region. However, this has sparked debate and skepticism among international observers, who are closely monitoring the developments.
“As part of the measures, positions on the frontline and in-depth, long-term firing points of the formations of Armenia’s armed forces, as well as combat assets and military facilities are incapacitated using high-precision weapons,” the Azerbaijani ministry of defence said in a statement.
Video footage from Stepanakert suggests that bomb raid alarms were activated, accompanied by the audible sounds of artillery fire. Additional videos from the region appear to depict Azerbaijan using drones to target Armenian anti-air defense positions. The outskirts of the city of Askeran also witnessed artillery fire, possibly from a Grad multiple rocket launcher system.
Local residents express deep concerns that Azerbaijan’s renewed hostilities could lead to a new campaign of violence. “We don’t have sufficient military strength to halt their offensive,” stated Beglaryan. “US military intervention should take place to prevent genocide here. Otherwise, hundreds of thousands of people could lose their lives.”
