Azerbaijan formalizes the dissolution of Nagorno-Karabakh

Azerbaijan has now officially dissolved the autonomous region of Nagorno-Karabakh, a move that underscores the shifting dynamics in the region following the conflict that erupted in late 2020.

The dissolution of Nagorno-Karabakh comes as Azerbaijan reasserts control over the region after a ceasefire agreement was brokered, ending a prolonged conflict with Armenia. This move represents a significant shift in the status quo and has implications for the people and governance of the area.

The territory of Nagorno-Karabakh is set to cease its existence, and the remaining ethnic Armenian residents will be subjected to Azerbaijani rule, as per a decree issued on Thursday. According to an announcement from the unrecognized Karabakh Armenian administration, de facto President Samvel Shakhramanyan has endorsed an agreement that will lead to the dissolution of all governmental bodies and organizations under their jurisdiction by January 1, 2024.

Simultaneously, the statement notes that the local populace is now required to acquaint themselves with the terms of reintegration outlined by the Republic of Azerbaijan. This aims to enable individuals to make an independent and personal decision regarding the possibility of residing in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Formal dissolution underscores the complexities of post-conflict resolution and the challenges faced by the international community in addressing the aftermath of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Azerbaijan’s decision to dissolve Nagorno-Karabakh highlights the importance of continued diplomatic efforts to ensure stability and peace in the South Caucasus. It also calls for a comprehensive approach to address the political, social, and humanitarian aspects of this evolving situation.
