Escalating violence in West Bank amid Gaza conflict as Israel arms settlers

The Israeli-occupied West Bank has witnessed a significant escalation in violence this year, reaching levels not seen in over 15 years. This surge in hostilities has been exacerbated by Israel’s involvement in a new war in the separate Gaza Strip. Tensions in the West Bank have taken a deadly turn, primarily due to the growing number of settlers who are now heavily armed.

In many areas of the West Bank, confrontations between Arab and Jewish communities were traditionally marked by stone-throwing incidents. However, the situation has taken a disturbing turn with reports of settlers, many in their twenties, possessing automatic weapons, turning otherwise confrontational encounters into potentially lethal ones. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that these settlers appear more willing to resort to gunfire.

One of the key figures behind this alarming development is Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s hard-right National Security Minister and one of at least two senior government ministers residing in the settlements. Ben-Gvir publicly declared his intent to purchase 10,000 rifles with the aim of arming Israeli civilians, including settlers, in response to escalating tensions stemming from the conflict in Gaza.

While Ben-Gvir’s office has not confirmed whether these firearms have already been distributed in the West Bank, his statement on Twitter, dated October 11, revealed that 900 assault rifles had already been handed out in areas situated to the north of the West Bank, near the Lebanese border. He further hinted that thousands more would soon follow.

The consequences of this surge in violence have been dire. According to the UN Humanitarian Affairs Office (OCHA), vigilante-style attacks by settlers have resulted in the deaths of 29 people this year alone, with at least eight fatalities occurring since October 7. These incidents have raised significant concerns among Palestinians, Israeli security experts, and Western officials.

The international community has not remained silent on this issue. Washington has unequivocally condemned settler attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, while the European Union, in a statement released on Tuesday, decried the phenomenon of “settler terrorism,” emphasizing the risk it poses of a “dangerous escalation of the conflict.”

As Israel continues to be embroiled in the Gaza conflict, the escalating violence in the West Bank is a concerning development that demands international attention and resolution.
