Latin America condemns Israel’s actions in Gaza

In a notable diplomatic move, several of Latin America’s most prominent countries have raised their voices to condemn Israel’s recent military actions in the Gaza Strip, expressing outrage over the densely populated refugee camp in the region that became the center of the conflict. These condemnations serve to deepen the diplomatic rift between the Latin American nations and Israel.

Argentina, a nation known for hosting Latin America’s largest Jewish community, has joined Peru and Mexico in denouncing the Israeli attacks. The United Nations human rights officials have also weighed in, suggesting that the Israeli strikes could potentially amount to war crimes.

These strong criticisms from Latin American nations come in the wake of Bolivia’s recent decision to cut diplomatic ties with Israel. Bolivia’s actions were triggered by Israel’s relentless bombardment and siege of Gaza, coupled with the growing number of civilian casualties. In addition to Bolivia, both Colombia and Chile have recalled their ambassadors from Israel.

In a statement from Peru’s foreign ministry, they affirmed their ongoing condemnation of violence, regardless of its origin, highlighting their commitment to peace. Mexican diplomat Alicia Buenrostro, speaking at a U.N. emergency special session on Gaza, called upon the “occupying power,” which refers to Israel, to relinquish its claims on Palestinian territories and emphasized the need for a two-state solution.

Alicia Buenrostro stated, “This needs to stop,” and added that Mexico is increasing its aid to Palestinian refugees, recognizing the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Argentina’s foreign ministry chimed in, drawing attention to the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and urging Israel to allow aid into the occupied territory. The three Latin American countries also united in their call for the release of hostages held by the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Tragically, both Argentina and Peru reported the loss of their citizens in the conflict, while Mexico revealed that some of its nationals were among those kidnapped.

The Gaza health ministry, overwhelmed by the ongoing violence, reports that a substantial number of Palestinians in the narrow coastal enclave have lost their lives to Israeli strikes since the conflict’s escalation on October 7, with a significant portion of the casualties being children.

As the international community grapples with the ongoing crisis, these condemnations from Latin American nations add to the global calls for an end to hostilities and the restoration of peace in the region.
