Top US general highlights risks of prolonged Gaza conflict

U.S. President Joe Biden’s top military adviser, General Charles Q. Brown, has cautioned about the potential risks associated with a protracted conflict in Gaza. General Brown emphasized that a swifter resolution to the fighting could help mitigate civilian suffering, which, if prolonged, might lead individuals to join the ranks of Palestinian militants.

Speaking on Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, General Brown acknowledged the substantial challenge of the stated objective to completely dismantle the Palestinian militant group governing the territory. He noted that Israel’s focus on targeting the senior leadership of the Palestinian militant group might yield quicker results.

In his first detailed remarks on the month-long conflict, General Brown expressed concern about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel initiated a ground and air offensive against the Palestinian militant group in the Gaza Strip following an incursion on October 7, resulting in casualties and hostage situations.

As of Wednesday, Palestinian officials reported 10,569 Gaza residents killed, with approximately 40% of them being children. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres criticized Israel’s military operations, stating that the civilian death toll indicated something “clearly wrong.”

General Brown, who assumed the role of the U.S. military’s top officer just over a month ago, expressed confidence in Israel’s adherence to the laws of war in Gaza. However, he highlighted the need for improved public explanations from Israel about its conduct in the conflict.

“There’s room for improvement based on what we’re seeing,” General Brown stated. He emphasized the importance of providing more context and transparency in Israel’s communication, particularly when discussing the reasons behind specific strikes.

When asked about concerns regarding a potential rise in Palestinian civilian casualties leading to increased recruitment by militants, General Brown acknowledged the risk. He stressed the significance of expediting the cessation of hostilities to minimize civilian strife and prevent individuals from being compelled to join the Palestinian militant group.

The comments from General Brown underscore the complex dynamics and challenges involved in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with a focus on the humanitarian impact and the potential consequences for civilian populations caught in the crossfire.
