China seeks increased investment from French companies, emphasizes fair business environment

In a recent phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron, President Xi expressed China’s desire for enhanced investment from French companies. The Chinese leader emphasized the importance of creating a fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese firms operating in France, signaling a commitment to strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

President Xi’s comments come as China faces increased scrutiny from the European Union (EU), with an ongoing investigation into Chinese electric vehicle subsidies and a potential probe into its steelmakers. European countries, including France, have raised concerns about China’s opaque laws and regulations regarding foreign companies operating within its borders.

During the phone call, President Xi conveyed China’s willingness to maintain high-level exchanges with France and welcomed more French products entering the Chinese market. The dialogue reinforces diplomatic relations between China and its European trading partner, especially following President Macron’s visit to China in April.

President Xi also expressed China’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with France at the United Nations and other multilateral institutions. China currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the month, positioning itself as a key player in global diplomatic affairs.

Addressing broader geopolitical issues, President Xi called on France to play a constructive role in fostering positive development in China-EU relations. Tensions between China and the EU have surfaced over various matters, including the EU’s efforts to reduce supply chain reliance on China and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“China and the European Union should remain partners for mutually beneficial cooperation,” President Xi emphasized during the call, underscoring the importance of maintaining collaborative ties for the benefit of both parties.

The leaders also exchanged views on the conflict in Gaza, with a shared agreement on the need to avoid further deterioration of the situation. They particularly emphasized the importance of preventing a more severe humanitarian crisis in the region.

As China seeks increased collaboration with France and aims for a conducive business environment, the diplomatic engagement between President Xi and President Macron serves as a crucial step in navigating the complexities of international relations and fostering economic cooperation in an ever-changing global landscape.
