Lavrov to confer with Arab and Muslim Foreign Ministers in Moscow regarding Gaza conflict

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is set to host a significant meeting in Moscow on Tuesday, bringing together foreign ministers from countries belonging to both the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The meeting aims to address the evolving situation in Gaza, according to a report from the RIA news agency released on Monday.

While the RIA report did not specify the participating countries, the gathering underscores Russia’s commitment to engaging with key regional players and addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The meeting is expected to provide a platform for discussions on diplomatic initiatives, humanitarian efforts, and potential ceasefires.

Russia, traditionally having close ties with Israel, has taken a nuanced stance during the recent conflict in Gaza, expressing concern over civilian casualties and reiterating its enduring support for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

As the meeting approaches, diplomatic channels will likely be activated to navigate the complexities of the Gaza conflict. The outcome of the discussions may influence the international community’s approach to the crisis, especially given the involvement of Arab and Muslim ministers from a range of nations.

On Monday, a delegation consisting of ministers from Arab and Muslim countries visited Beijing, marking the initial phase of a diplomatic tour aimed at advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The delegation, comprising representatives from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Palestinian authorities, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, seeks to gather support for humanitarian aid and put pressure on Western nations to challenge Israel’s justification of its actions as self-defense.

During meetings with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the delegation discussed the urgent need for a ceasefire, emphasizing the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave. The diplomatic efforts are set to continue as the delegation plans to meet officials representing each of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

The Moscow meeting, against the backdrop of international diplomatic initiatives, presents an opportunity for regional leaders to engage in dialogue, explore potential solutions, and contribute to efforts aimed at bringing about a resolution to the complex and sensitive conflict in Gaza.
