UK Extends Deployment of Sky Sabre Air Defence System in Poland Until Year’s End

The United Kingdom has announced an extension of the deployment of its cutting-edge Sky Sabre air defence system in Poland, along with the presence of 100 British troops, until the conclusion of this year.

Originally dispatched to Poland in April 2022 in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Sky Sabre deployment was initially scheduled to conclude by the end of this month. However, it has been decided to prolong its presence until at least December.

British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed this decision during his visit to Poland, where he held discussions with his Polish counterpart Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and observed ongoing NATO exercises.

Shapps emphasized the UK’s commitment to defending its NATO allies, asserting that the Sky Sabre system would contribute to maintaining Poland’s security against emerging threats and aggressive adversaries.

Acknowledging Poland’s vital role on NATO’s eastern flank, Shapps conveyed the UK’s readiness to provide assistance, stating that the Sky Sabre system could offer significant support to Poland in its proximity to potential conflict zones.

Expressing gratitude for the UK’s steadfast support, Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted the importance of ensuring the security of NATO’s eastern borders.

The Sky Sabre air defence system boasts advanced capabilities, capable of launching missiles at speeds of 2,300 miles per hour with precision targeting, making it effective against various airborne threats, including planes, drones, and rockets. In addition to deploying its own launchers in Poland, the UK previously agreed to sell air defence systems to the country.

During today’s engagements, both parties met with Polish and British troops participating in NATO’s Dragon24 exercises in Poland, underscoring their commitment to collective defence. Discussions also centered on providing further aid to Ukraine in the face of ongoing aggression.

Shapps reiterated NATO’s stance on defensive operations, emphasizing the alliance’s resolve to prevent further aggression from Russia. He stressed the necessity of halting Putin’s expansionist ambitions, emphasizing NATO’s focus on deterrence and protection.
