On Wednesday, police raided the town hall of the Norman port city of Le Havre. An investigation is underway against the mayor of the city, Eduard Philippe. He is accused of a number of alleged offenses, such as harassment and misuse of public funds.
Philippe served as Prime Minister under President Emmanuel Macron from 2017 to 2020 and became the first prime minister appointed by Macron after he became president. Philippe, who is running for president, is one of France’s most popular politicians. He is considered a likely candidate for the 2027 presidential election. In February, Philippe told a local radio station that he was “preparing” for the elections.
The Financial Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a multi-year agreement signed by Philippe and Stephanie de Baselier, one of the deputy mayors. By agreement, a non-profit organization run by Baselier manages the innovation center in Le Havre.
Philippe did not renew the contract with one of the employees. Soon, the former employee filed a complaint with the court, as a result of which an investigation was launched.
The authorities of the city of Le Havre confirmed the raid, adding that it is “customary in this sort of investigation.”
