Trudeau Shifts Immigration Stance Amidst Protests

Against the backdrop of protests in Canada, Justin Trudeau announced that the issue of immigration would be brought under control.

Previously, Trudeau had been a supporter of immigration, stating that the country’s economic opportunities grow with the arrival of temporary immigrants across the border.

Trudeau mentioned that the proportion of temporary immigrants in the population has increased to 7.5% from 2% in 2017, emphasizing the necessity to “rein in” these figures.

Trudeau expressed his intention to reduce these figures. This is a responsible approach to immigration, which continues regarding our permanent residents, like us, but also slightly curbs temporary immigration, which has placed such great pressure on our communities.

Trudeau’s change in tone occurred after he began relying on immigrants to stimulate economic growth and reduce the labor shortage, as previously reported by Reuters.

The influx of immigrants into Canada post-COVID-19 pandemic has caused a serious crisis in several areas, leading to increased rental prices and straining the healthcare system.

According to the report, Canadian citizens showed strong support for immigration in 2020, reaching a historical high, but this support has since dropped to its lowest level in three decades by the end of last year.
