London Mayor Accuses Conservative Rival of Trump-Like Stance on Climate Crisis

London’s current mayor, Sadiq Khan, is set to challenge his Conservative opponent in the race for the city’s mayoralty, accusing her of adopting a “Trumpian” attitude toward the climate crisis, as he unveils plans for solar panel installations on schools.

Khan is anticipated to acknowledge the pushback against his proposal to expand the ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) in a forthcoming address, yet he remains steadfast in his commitment to further environmental initiatives.

As part of his agenda, Khan will establish a fund aimed at equipping school rooftops with solar panels, reiterating his pledge to achieve net zero emissions in London by 2030.

Drawing a contrast between his vision and that of his Conservative counterpart, Susan Hall, Khan will denounce what he perceives as Hall’s reluctance to address environmental concerns. He will highlight her opposition to green policies and support for delaying the UK government’s 2050 net zero target.

In a statement expected to be delivered, Khan will assert, “London stands at a critical juncture. Susan Hall represents an anti-green stance akin to that of Donald Trump regarding the climate crisis.”

He will urge voters who prioritize environmental issues to consider the implications of the upcoming election, emphasizing the detrimental impact of regressive environmental policies on air quality and the environment.

Responding to criticisms, including those from within his own party, Khan will defend his decision to expand the Ulez, citing its effectiveness in reducing roadside pollution.

However, Hall’s campaign team has refuted Khan’s claims, accusing him of proposing a “pay-per-mile” scheme for drivers, an allegation Khan has denied.

Hall’s spokesperson stated, “Susan advocates for a fair and pragmatic transition to net zero, whereas Sadiq Khan’s approach burdens motorists with Ulez and pay-per-mile taxes.”

Khan’s announcement of an initial investment for solar panel installations at 50 schools across London will be accompanied by pledges to transition London’s bus fleet to zero emissions by 2030, and to increase public bike parking spaces and electric vehicle charging points throughout the city.

The upcoming mayoral race promises to be a contest of differing environmental philosophies, with Khan positioning himself as a champion of sustainable policies while challenging his opponent’s stance on climate action.
