A U.S. Secret Service agent was removed from Vice President Kamala Harris’s security detail this week after exhibiting behavior described as distressing by colleagues, according to an agency spokesman on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Monday morning at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, D.C., shortly before Vice President Harris departed for a campaign event in Wisconsin. A reporter from The New York Times, who was part of the media accompanying Vice President Harris, overheard medical personnel attempting to calm someone at the scene.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, stated, “At approximately 9 a.m. on April 22, a U.S. Secret Service special agent supporting the vice president’s departure from Joint Base Andrews began displaying behavior their colleagues found distressing.” Guglielmi further mentioned that the agent was relieved of their assignment while medical personnel were called in. He clarified that Vice President Harris was at the Naval Observatory in Washington at the time, and the incident had no impact on her departure from Joint Base Andrews.
Secret Service officials refrained from providing additional details about the incident, citing it as a “medical matter.”
