During his visit to Beijing, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said China’s actions are contributing to Russian-Ukrainian tensions, which he called the most serious challenge to European security since the Cold War.
While Mr. Blinken refrained from specifying the potential measures the US might undertake in response, he also emphasized areas of cooperation and progress between the two nations.
Acknowledging China’s efforts to curb the supply of the opioid drug fentanyl to the United States, Mr. Blinken commended Beijing’s actions in addressing a key public health crisis affecting the US. Despite being the primary source of fentanyl for the US market, China’s cooperation in intercepting these supplies was lauded by the US diplomat.
Furthermore, Mr. Blinken expressed optimism regarding China’s potential to play a constructive role in Middle Eastern affairs, particularly in mitigating tensions between Iran and Israel. He pointed to China’s diplomatic engagement with Iran as a means to advocate against further escalation in the region.
The visit marks Mr. Blinken’s second trip to Beijing within a span of 10 months, indicative of intensified dialogue and diplomacy between the two countries aimed at easing bilateral tensions. This increased engagement follows a period of heightened strain in US-China relations, characterized by disputes over Taiwan, the South China Sea, and US restrictions on advanced technology exports.
While the recent passage of legislation in the US targeting Chinese-owned TikTok underscores ongoing challenges, Mr. Blinken disclosed that the matter did not feature prominently in his discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. President Xi, during his meeting with Mr. Blinken, acknowledged the progress achieved since his previous encounter with US President Joe Biden in November, affirming the potential for the US and China to transition from rivals to partners.
In his remarks, President Xi advocated for a positive outlook on China’s development, underscoring the prospect for improved relations and mutual cooperation between the two nations if the US adopts a constructive approach.
