H.I.V. Infections Linked to “Vampire Facials” at Unlicensed Spa in New Mexico

At least three women contracted H.I.V. following cosmetic “vampire facial” treatments at an unlicensed spa in Albuquerque, according to federal officials, marking the first documented instance of H.I.V. transmission through cosmetic injection services. The affected individuals were part of a cluster of five people who shared similar H.I.V. strains, with four having undergone platelet-rich plasma microneedling at the spa. Investigations into the contamination source are ongoing, highlighting the importance of adherence to proper infection control measures in cosmetic procedures.

The outbreak came to light after a woman diagnosed with H.I.V. in 2018 reported receiving a platelet-rich plasma microneedling facial at the spa, prompting a public health investigation. Subsequent inspections revealed unsanitary conditions at the facility, including the reuse of needles and improper storage of blood specimens. Despite the closure of the spa in 2018, challenges in identifying and notifying potentially exposed individuals persisted due to inadequate record-keeping.

Health officials stress the importance of verifying the licensure of cosmetic service providers, as licensed practitioners are required to undergo infection control training and adhere to established safety protocols. While the risk of infection during cosmetic procedures is generally low, individuals with concerns are encouraged to undergo H.I.V. testing as part of routine medical care.

“Vampire facials” involve the use of a patient’s own blood to stimulate skin rejuvenation and repair. Although promoted for various cosmetic benefits, such as reducing signs of aging and acne scarring, the procedure carries potential risks, especially when performed under unsanitary conditions.

Efforts to contain the outbreak have involved extensive testing and outreach to former spa clients and their sexual partners. While investigations have identified a cluster of spa-related H.I.V. cases, the exact route of contamination remains unclear. Health officials emphasize the importance of vigilant oversight and adherence to safety standards in all cosmetic procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
