Study Suggests Common Supplement Could Expedite Recovery from Colds

A recent analysis indicates that a readily available and affordable supplement might reduce the duration of a cold by up to two days.

Researchers conducted a review of data from eight trials involving over 900 participants to assess whether zinc supplementation could alleviate symptoms of the common cold.

Zinc, an essential mineral found in various foods and widely available in supermarkets for as little as $5 per bottle, has long been promoted as a natural remedy for colds and coughs by health enthusiasts on social media.

For the first time, a comprehensive review by experts from the renowned Cochrane Collaboration in the UK lends some support to the purported benefits of zinc supplementation. However, the review cautioned that the evidence supporting this conclusion was considered weak.

While the review indicated that zinc supplementation could potentially shorten the duration of a cold by approximately two days, it also highlighted potential side effects such as bowel issues, nausea, and an unpleasant taste in the mouth associated with zinc capsules.

Zinc is vital for various bodily functions, including DNA synthesis, protein building, and immune system support. Laboratory studies have suggested that it may have antiviral properties by inhibiting viral replication in the mouth and nose, thereby limiting the spread of viruses throughout the body.

Dr. Daryl Nault, a health sciences professor involved in the review, emphasized the need for caution due to variations in trial methodologies. However, she acknowledged that zinc supplementation could potentially shorten illness duration, albeit with the risk of side effects.

Dr. Susan Wieland, a researcher and senior author of the review, stressed the necessity for further research to establish the efficacy of zinc supplementation in treating colds.

Zinc products have been marketed as cold remedies since the 1980s, particularly in the US, with various formulations available from different retailers.

In addition to assessing the effects of zinc on cold duration, researchers also examined its impact on symptom severity and its potential for cold prevention. However, the evidence regarding these aspects was inconclusive.

The study underscores the importance of consulting a healthcare professional before initiating any supplementation regimen, particularly when experiencing illness.
