Kremlin Criticizes France for Readying ‘Direct’ Role in Ukraine Conflict

The Kremlin has accused French President Emmanuel Macron of preparing France for direct involvement in Ukraine, following his recent promises of military support to Kyiv. The Kremlin’s reaction comes amid heightened tensions in Europe over the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized Macron’s recent statements as provocative and potentially destabilizing for Europe. Speaking at the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday, Peskov remarked, “Macron demonstrates absolute support for the Kyiv regime and declares readiness for France’s direct participation in the military conflict.”

Peskov argued that Macron’s stance, which includes the transfer of Mirage fighter jets to Ukraine and the training of Ukrainian pilots, could escalate the situation further. “We consider these statements to be very, very provocative, inflaming tensions on the continent and not conducive to anything positive,” he added.

Macron has recently adopted a stronger position in supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion. On Thursday, he announced that France would supply Mirage fighter jets to Ukraine and assist in training Ukrainian pilots, underscoring his commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Despite Macron’s assertive declarations, France currently does not have military personnel directly involved in Ukraine. However, Ukrainian officials have indicated that discussions are ongoing with Paris regarding potential future support, including training and advisory roles.

Macron has not ruled out the deployment of French troops to Ukraine, a position that contrasts with the more cautious approach of some other NATO members. This stance has drawn significant ire from Moscow, which has vehemently opposed any foreign military presence in Ukraine.

Earlier this week, Russia issued a stark warning, stating that it would consider any foreign instructors or military personnel in Ukraine as legitimate targets for strikes. This warning reflects Russia’s heightened sensitivity to international involvement in the conflict and its determination to deter external military support for Ukraine.

As the war in Ukraine continues, the international community remains deeply divided on how best to support Kyiv while avoiding a broader escalation. Macron’s recent actions and statements indicate a willingness to take a more proactive role, which could potentially shift the dynamics of international support for Ukraine.
