The collision occurred in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. The Kanchenjunga Express was reportedly struck by the goods train, leading to severe damage. West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the incident as “tragic” and stated that immediate rescue and recovery efforts were underway.
“Doctors, ambulances, and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, and medical assistance,” Banerjee said in a social media post, emphasizing the urgency of the situation by noting that “action on war-footing [has been] initiated.”
Images broadcasted on Indian television networks depicted the aftermath of the collision, showing carriages overturned and piled upon each other. The chaotic scene underscored the severity of the impact, with carriages flipped on their sides and one precariously balanced atop another.

Notable past disasters include the 1981 train derailment in Bihar, which resulted in approximately 800 fatalities, and a three-train collision in Odisha last year, which claimed nearly 300 lives.
