Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has assured him of efforts to lift restrictions on arms supplies to Israel. This development comes amid ongoing tensions and conflict in the region.
In a statement, Netanyahu expressed gratitude for the United States’ support since Israel began its operations against Hamas in October. However, he criticized the Biden administration for allegedly withholding weapons and ammunition from Israel over the past few months. “It is inconceivable that in the past few months, the administration has been withholding weapons and ammunitions to Israel,” Netanyahu stated.
According to Netanyahu, Blinken confirmed that the administration is actively working to remove these barriers, saying they are working “day and night” to address the issue. “I certainly hope that’s the case. It should be the case,” Netanyahu added. “Give us the tools and we’ll finish the job a lot faster.”
The Biden administration’s stance on arms supplies to Israel has been under scrutiny, especially following President Joe Biden’s warning last month. Biden indicated that the US would halt weapon supplies if Israeli forces initiated a major offensive in Rafah, a densely populated city in southern Gaza. Amid these tensions, the Washington Post reported on Monday that two influential Democrats in Congress have recently agreed to support a significant arms sale to Israel. The deal, which includes 50 F-15 fighter jets valued at over $18 billion, had been delayed for months but has now gained approval from Representative Gregory Meeks and Senator Ben Cardin, following strong pressure from the Biden administration.
