In an unexpected appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the 2024 presidential race, dismissing speculations about his withdrawal despite recent criticisms.
President Joe Biden called into MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Monday morning, firmly rejecting suggestions that he might bow out of the 2024 presidential race. Speaking to hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, Biden expressed unwavering confidence in his candidacy and addressed concerns following a recent debate performance.
“The bottom line here is that we’re not going anywhere. I am not going anywhere,” Biden declared during the live interview. He emphasized his determination by stating, “I wouldn’t be running if I didn’t absolutely believe that I am the best candidate to beat Donald Trump in 2024. We had a democratic nominating process where the voters spoke clearly. I won 14 million of those votes.”
This call came in the wake of significant criticism from both media allies and members of his own party, who have questioned his capacity to remain a strong candidate after what has been described as a “halting” debate showing. Concerns over his mental and cognitive agility have been circulating, adding pressure on Biden to demonstrate his readiness for another presidential campaign.
Addressing his debate performance directly, Biden acknowledged, “Look at my career. I have not had many of those nights. It was a terrible night and I really regret it happened.” This candid admission reflected an awareness of the evening’s impact, yet he remained confident in his overall track record and ability to lead.
The president also explained his recent extensive travel across the country, a move he believes confirms his instinct that the Democratic Party still supports him as the nominee. Biden suggested that his interactions with voters reaffirm his belief in his candidacy and counter the notion that former President Donald Trump has made significant inroads with the electorate since the June 27 debate.
Brzezinski introduced Biden as the “presumptive Democratic nominee,” to which he confidently responded, “I’m more than the presumptive. I’m going to be the nominee.” This bold assertion underscores Biden’s resolve to stay the course and continue his campaign efforts leading up to the 2024 election.
