Norway has announced its decision to donate six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, as confirmed by a government statement on Wednesday during a NATO summit in Washington. This donation comes as leaders of NATO member states are preparing to unveil new support measures for Ukraine.
The Norwegian government, led by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, stated that the delivery of the F-16s is scheduled to begin in 2024. This move is part of a broader effort by NATO to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities as the conflict with Russia continues.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been actively seeking increased military aid and financial support from the 32-member NATO alliance. He aims to secure more weapons and funding, as well as security guarantees, in hopes of shifting the trajectory of the conflict.
Despite these efforts, a senior NATO official noted earlier this week that Ukraine has yet to gather the necessary munitions and personnel to launch large-scale offensive operations.
