Slovak PM Warns NATO Membership for Ukraine Could Lead to World War III

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico issued a stark warning on Thursday, stating that Ukraine’s accession to NATO would guarantee the outbreak of World War III. This statement comes in the wake of NATO’s declaration that Ukraine’s path to membership is “irreversible.”

“I understand Ukraine’s wishes, it is a sovereign country, but Ukraine’s membership in NATO is just a guarantee of World War III,” Fico remarked in a Facebook video.

The warning from the Moscow-friendly prime minister emerged just hours after Slovakia’s delegation at the NATO summit in Washington expressed support for the alliance’s unified stance on Ukraine’s future membership.

Fico emphasized that he had instructed Slovakia’s representatives at the summit to ensure that Ukraine can only join NATO once it meets all the criteria for membership and receives unanimous approval from all member countries.

Having been a NATO member since 2004, Slovakia’s stance on Ukraine’s membership reflects the complex geopolitical tensions surrounding the issue. Fico, who is serving his fourth term as prime minister since 2006, has committed to halting military aid to Ukraine, asserting there is “no war” in Kyiv.

Additionally, Fico expressed his desire to have accompanied Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on his recent visit to Moscow, where Orbán met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
