The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported on Saturday that its rescue and emergency teams had evacuated more than 100 injured individuals and 23 bodies from the aftermath of recent strikes in Khan Younis. According to the Gaza health ministry, the total death toll from the attacks has exceeded 70 people.
Many of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals managed by the Red Crescent. Dr. Wahid Qudaih, the medical director of Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, highlighted the dire situation, stating, “All the hospitals in the area are full of the wounded.” He further explained that the facilities lack sufficient beds to accommodate all the patients.
“A large number of patients are lying on the floor while staff are dealing with critical cases and all of the medical staff and equipment and field hospitals are exhausted,” Dr. Qudaih said in a telephone interview.
The medical infrastructure in Gaza is buckling under the strain of ongoing conflict, suffering from severe shortages of electricity, fuel, and medical supplies necessary to treat the increasing number of wounded individuals.
Reflecting on the severity of Saturday’s events, Dr. Qudaih remarked, “It was an unusual event regarding the number of cases and the nature of injuries. We have some seriously wounded people who might lose their lives at any moment.” He added that children were among the injured, underscoring the tragic impact on the most vulnerable.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, the healthcare system in Gaza is struggling to cope with the relentless surge of casualties, raising urgent concerns about the region’s capacity to provide adequate medical care amid the ongoing conflict.
