Poland to Allocate 5 Percent of GDP to Defense in 2025, Announces Foreign Minister

Poland plans to increase its defense spending to 5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2025, according to an announcement by Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski during an interview with Bloomberg Television broadcast on Friday evening.

This decision follows a significant increase in defense spending this year, with Poland allocating more than 4 percent of its GDP to defense in response to the start of Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“Poland spends 4 percent of GDP on defense, and we are going to spend 5 percent next year,” Sikorski stated. “We are number one in NATO, including the United States, in proportion obviously, because we are no longer in eternal post-Cold War peace.”

Additionally, Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk indicated on Thursday, in an interview with TVN24, that Poland’s defense budget would rise by approximately 10 percent in 2025, reaching a record high.

Army Chief of Staff General Wieslaw Kukula emphasized the importance of this increased funding, stating at a press conference on Wednesday that Poland needs to prepare its soldiers for potential all-out conflict.
