France’s High-Speed Rail Network Hit by Vandalism Ahead of Olympics

French train operator SNCF has reported significant acts of intentional vandalism on several high-speed rail routes, causing widespread disruption just before the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. These “malicious acts,” including arson attacks, have severely affected France’s TGV network.

Details of the Incidents
SNCF described the incidents as a “massive attack on a large scale to paralyze the TGV network.” The disruptions are expected to last through the weekend as repairs are underway.

Lille-Paris Line: Traffic was halted at 5:15 a.m. due to sabotage in the Arras area.
Paris-Eastern France Route: Vandalism between Metz and Nancy has caused serious disruptions.

Atlantic Line: An act of vandalism near Courtalain, where tracks split for Brittany and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, led to a halt in traffic.

Southeastern Line: Thwarted sabotage attempts were reported.
SNCF noted that deliberate fires were set to damage the installations, and repair teams are already on-site.

Impact on Train Services
The attacks have caused numerous train cancellations and diversions, affecting both domestic and international routes. Eurostar services, which connect the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, were also impacted. Trains traveling between Paris and Lille were diverted via the classic line, extending journey times by about an hour and a half.

Passengers with disrupted journeys are being contacted via email or text, and delays are expected on other domestic and intercity routes.

Official Reactions
French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera condemned the attacks, linking them to the upcoming Olympics. “It’s completely appalling. To target the games is to target France,” she said.

Olympic Games Opening
The attacks come just hours before the Olympic Games opening ceremony, set to take place along Paris’s River Seine at 7:30 p.m. local time on Friday. The event is expected to attract tens of thousands of athletes and spectators, alongside a heavy police presence.

As investigations continue, it remains unclear who is responsible for these coordinated acts of vandalism.
