Twenty-two individuals were injured following an explosion in the paddock area of Germany’s renowned Nürburgring racetrack, police confirmed on Saturday.
The incident, which occurred on Friday night, is believed to have been caused by the explosion of a compressed air canister. According to reports from the German news agency dpa, one person was severely injured, three others sustained serious injuries, and the remaining individuals were slightly injured.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with several of the injured being airlifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. As of Saturday, police were still on the scene conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
The explosion took place behind a pit in the track’s paddock area during a test and set-up session ahead of the NLS4 race, according to a statement from track officials in the town of Nürburg, West Germany.
Despite the accident, organizers announced that the NLS24 race would proceed as scheduled, following consultations with all parties involved. However, they emphasized that participation in the race would be voluntary.
