In a state of the nation address to Parliament President Patrice Talon of Benin revealed the country’s desire to quickly restore diplomatic ties with neighboring nations that have experienced coups. Emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence, President Talon highlighted the need for open communication and cooperation with countries such as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso were listed among Benin’s key business partners in the 2022 foreign trade report by the national institute of statistics and demographics. President Talon underlined the significance of these nations in Benin’s international relations, expressing a commitment to fostering positive and collaborative connections.
President Talon clarified that Benin had never severed ties with its neighboring countries, emphasizing that diplomatic efforts had been ongoing. He mentioned that Benin’s diplomacy had discreetly conveyed messages to these nations, particularly to Niger, with the belief that there is a time for condemnation, a time for demands, and a time for careful review and acknowledgment of events.
While expressing the desire for normalized relations, President Talon stressed the importance of cooperation and transparency from military leaders involved in coups. He emphasized the necessity for these leaders to disclose their intentions and expectations regarding the international community, highlighting the significance of open dialogue in addressing the aftermath of political upheavals.
President Talon referenced the challenging context in the West African region, which has witnessed four coups since 2020. Acknowledging the complex dynamics at play, he outlined Benin’s commitment to contributing to regional stability and fostering understanding among nations.
