Announced this plan by Maura Healey, the governor of Massachusetts from the Democratic Party. The facility is planned to accommodate 100 migrant families.
Veterans who lived in the house before that had to pay for accommodation. But migrants are provided with housing for free. According to the Chelsea Nursing Home website, veterans who lived in the home had to pay $30 a day for nursing home care. Without care, the price was $10 per day. For all, deductions of $300 from personal income were also added to this.
Massachusetts resident George Belmonte: “I can’t believe the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home, which is for the Vets, is going to be used for the immigrants overflow. How about taking care of the homeless vets first? I am all for helping people but how about taking care of those already here and homeless.”
The home for elderly veterans in Chelsea was closed in December. The building was empty for a while.
Massachusetts authorities believe that the Veterans Home in Chelsea will become a “safe place” for migrants. They will be able to settle there for a while until they learn English, find a job and a new place to live.
Currently, 240 families in Massachusetts live in social protection centers, while 7,500 families live in public emergency shelters. The migration crisis in Massachusetts is escalating. Last month, in just one week, 400 people were accommodated at the state’s newest emergency shelter, located in Roxbury.
