US Delays Weapons Shipment to Israel Amid Concerns Over Potential Offensive in Rafah

The Biden administration has temporarily halted a planned delivery of weapons to Israel as a precautionary measure to prevent a potential escalation of conflict in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, according to a senior administration official.

Reports from multiple news agencies including AFP, Associated Press, and Reuters indicate that the decision to pause the weapons shipment was prompted by concerns over Israeli intentions to launch an assault on Rafah, where a significant number of Palestinians have sought refuge amid ongoing violence in Gaza.

Unnamed US officials revealed that the review of proposed weapons transfers began in April, coinciding with signs suggesting Israel was nearing a decision on a possible offensive in Rafah. As a result, one shipment of weapons was postponed last week, comprising 1,800 900kg bombs and 1,700 225kg bombs.

The focus on the potential use of heavier bombs in densely populated urban areas, akin to previous scenarios in Gaza, underscores the sensitivity of the situation. The decision on whether to proceed with the shipment remains pending.

Reports from Reuters indicate that the delayed shipments involve Boeing-made Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) and Small Diameter Bombs, with an estimated delay of at least two weeks. The Wall Street Journal reported that approximately 6,500 JDAMs were subject to delay.

The timing of the delay coincides with public pressure from Washington urging Israel to postpone any planned offensive in Rafah until measures are taken to minimize civilian casualties. However, Israeli forces reportedly seized control of the Rafah border crossing shortly after Hamas announced acceptance of a ceasefire proposal from international mediators.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated the United States’ unwavering commitment to Israel’s security while avoiding direct commentary on the reported arms shipment delays. The Pentagon stated that there was no official policy decision to withhold arms from Israel, emphasizing the strong alliance between the two nations.

The Rafah crossing holds strategic importance as both an aid route and an escape pathway for those seeking refuge in Egypt. With millions of Palestinians, including a significant number of children, sheltering in Rafah, international humanitarian organizations have warned of catastrophic consequences in the event of an attack.

Israel’s military actions in Gaza have drawn condemnation and calls for action, with protests erupting in various countries demanding a reassessment of support for Israel, including the provision of weaponry. Despite speculation over arms delays, a senior Israeli official downplayed any specific hold-up, reaffirming the nation’s resolve to defend itself if necessary.
