The White House’s “near-total freeze-out” on external advice has alarmed some Democratic strategists, raising concerns about the Biden-Harris campaign’s approach to key voter issues. Democratic strategist Doug Schoen expressed his apprehensions regarding the administration’s handling of economic and border concerns, as well as progressive dissatisfaction over Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Schoen highlighted the potential impact of progressive discontent on the upcoming election. He noted that progressives might abstain from voting or support RFK Jr., particularly in swing states like Minnesota and Michigan, which could jeopardize President Biden’s re-election chances.
Schoen emphasized that the Biden administration appears “uniquely tone-deaf” and unresponsive to advice from experienced Democratic insiders who have successfully navigated past campaigns.
Schoen criticized the Biden campaign’s lack of a clear strategy, particularly on issues like inflation and border security. He argued that merely criticizing Donald Trump and citing statistical accomplishments is insufficient.
“I don’t think [the Biden campaign] has a clear theory of the case or strategy. They have no message on inflation. They have no message on the southern border. All that they appear to do is demonize Donald Trump and talk about their statistical record of accomplishments. And everything I see in my polls and every other poll says it just isn’t working,” Schoen stated.
Since the October 7 attacks and the subsequent conflict in the Middle East, a rift has grown within the Democratic Party. The progressive wing, advocating for pro-Palestine positions, has become increasingly vocal against the administration’s stance on Israel.
Prominent “Squad” members, such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., have criticized President Biden for supporting Israel despite rising domestic tensions over the war. At the People’s Conference for Palestine, Tlaib accused Biden of enabling genocide.
Rep. Ilhan Omar also urged continued pressure on the administration to change its course, deeming the ongoing situation in Gaza “unconscionable.”
While some Democrats, like Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, remain strong advocates for Israel, the internal conflict over the U.S. stance on the Israeli-Hamas conflict could pose a significant challenge for Biden’s re-election campaign.
As the November election approaches, the Biden administration faces a complex array of issues, including the economy, border security, and foreign policy. The growing divide within the Democratic Party, particularly regarding Israel, adds another layer of difficulty to President Biden’s re-election efforts.
