Xi Jinping Seeks to Strengthen Energy Cooperation with Arab States

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced his intention to deepen energy cooperation with Arab states during a forum of regional leaders and diplomats held in Beijing on Thursday. This move reflects China’s ongoing efforts to bolster diplomatic ties with Middle Eastern nations, which have become crucial suppliers of oil to the country.

In his speech, President Xi emphasized China’s commitment to enhancing strategic partnerships with Arab countries in the oil and gas sectors. “China will further enhance strategic cooperation with the Arab side on oil and gas, and integrate supply security with market security,” Xi said, according to a statement from the foreign ministry.

Xi also highlighted China’s readiness to collaborate on the development and production of new energy technologies. “China is ready to work with the Arab side on new energy technology R&D and equipment production,” he added. He further pledged support for Chinese energy companies and financial institutions to engage in renewable energy projects across Arab states, targeting a total installed capacity of over three million kilowatts.

This announcement follows Xi’s visit to Saudi Arabia in late 2022, where he discussed deepening energy cooperation. China remains the largest buyer of Saudi oil, underscoring the importance of these bilateral relations.

The forum in Beijing this week includes the participation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and several other Arab leaders. While the primary focus is on energy cooperation, discussions are also anticipated to address the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

China’s expanding presence in the Middle East has raised concerns in Washington, with U.S. officials cautioning against potential negative repercussions from China’s growing influence in the region. Despite these warnings, Beijing continues to pursue closer ties with Middle Eastern countries, highlighting the strategic importance of energy collaboration.
