Biden Arrives in France to Commemorate D-Day Anniversary and Meet Zelensky

President Joe Biden arrived in France on Wednesday for a state visit that includes marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy and meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

During his trip, Biden aims to strengthen transatlantic ties as Russia advances in Ukraine, and Europe faces elections that could alter the geopolitical landscape. The President will deliver a major speech emphasizing threats to democracy and the rise of dictators.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan described the visit as “action-packed and extremely moving,” highlighting the opportunity for Biden to thank veterans who contributed to the preservation of democracy and peace. Biden will address these themes at Pointe du Hoc, the same location where President Ronald Reagan praised World War II veterans in 1984.

In his speech, Biden will argue against isolationism, a strategy associated with his predecessor, Donald Trump. The White House has not confirmed whether Biden will directly reference Trump. Instead, Biden will focus on “timeless principles” that have historically underpinned American security and democracy.

Biden, wearing his signature aviator sunglasses, disembarked from Air Force One on Wednesday. After a day in Paris, he will travel to Normandy on Thursday, where he will meet with Zelensky and later at the G7 summit in Italy.

The President’s visit comes as Biden supports Ukraine’s use of American-provided weapons on Russian territory.

Biden’s Normandy speech will draw parallels between World War II and contemporary challenges, particularly the conflict in Ukraine. He will highlight NATO’s role in defending freedom and sovereignty in Europe.

The President will be joined by 25 world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, King Charles, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Biden’s remarks will emphasize the enduring importance of democracy, a key theme in his re-election campaign.

Biden and his team are aiming to capture the spirit of Reagan’s famous speech, with hopes of resonating with voters in crucial swing states. The visit also coincides with Hunter Biden’s court appearance in Delaware and ongoing geopolitical tensions, including Biden’s Middle East ceasefire proposal.

The President will conclude his visit with a state dinner hosted by Macron in Paris. The discussions will cover ongoing support for Ukraine and bilateral cooperation on economic, space, and nuclear issues. Biden will return to the US on Sunday before heading back to Europe next week for the G7 meeting in Italy.
