Heightened Security Measures Anticipated Ahead of Expected Protests in Kenya

Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, is bracing for potential unrest as riot police have been deployed and roads barricaded around key government buildings in preparation for anticipated protests on Thursday. This follows previous demonstrations that turned violent, resulting in reported casualties and significant property damage.

Local television broadcasts have depicted a subdued central business district in Nairobi, where streets are notably empty and a visible presence of security officers is evident on patrol. The increased security measures come in the wake of recent protests against proposed tax increases that escalated into deadly clashes. During these protests, parts of the parliament building were set ablaze, and police responded with live ammunition.

President William Ruto responded to the public outcry by announcing the withdrawal of a finance bill containing the contentious tax proposals, a move aimed at defusing tensions. Despite this concession, demonstrators are planning to gather once more in the city center to mourn the lives lost during previous protests.

Some groups have expressed intentions to march towards the president’s official residence, State House, prompting warnings from prominent figures associated with the protests about the potential for further violence. Roads leading to State House have been blocked, with security personnel redirecting motorists and pedestrians away from the area as a precautionary measure.

In contrast, the situation in Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city, appeared relatively calm as local TV stations reported residents going about their daily activities without major disruptions. However, isolated clashes were reported in Migori, located in western Kenya, where police deployed tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

In Kisumu, another city in western Kenya, large crowds gathered as tensions remained palpable amid ongoing socio-political unrest in the region.

The deployment of riot police and the implementation of roadblocks underscore the government’s efforts to maintain public order and prevent further escalation of unrest as the country navigates through a challenging period of civil unrest and political volatility.
