Russia proposes three-way naval exercise with North Korea and China: Report

Russia’s defense minister has suggested to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that their countries conduct a joint naval exercise, in collaboration with China, as reported by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency on Monday, citing information from South Korea’s intelligence agency.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea in July to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, celebrated in North Korea as “Victory Day.” During this visit, he had the opportunity to meet with Kim.

They both attended a defense exhibition that showcased North Korea’s prohibited ballistic missiles, as reported by North Korean state media at the time.

According to Yonhap, Shoigu made the proposal for a three-way naval exercise to Kim during his visit, although no specific details were provided.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service informed the National Assembly that Shoigu seemed to have held a private meeting with Kim to discuss a broad expansion of military cooperation, as reported by Yonhap.

Russia and North Korea have recently expressed interest in strengthening their military ties, even though North Korea has denied engaging in any “arms dealings” with Russia.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby mentioned during a press briefing last month that Shoigu attempted to offer artillery ammunition to Russia during his visit to North Korea.

The United States has recently imposed sanctions on three entities it accuses of being involved in arms deals between North Korea and Russia.

North Korea has conducted six nuclear tests since 2006 and has been testing various missiles in recent years. However, it rarely conducts military exercises with its neighboring countries.

In contrast, the United States and its ally, South Korea, regularly hold joint military exercises, which North Korea has criticized as preparations for war against it.
