According to a recent court filing, Special Counsel David Weiss intends to indict Hunter Biden before the end of this month.
Weiss stated on Wednesday, “The Speedy Trial Act requires that the Government obtain the return of an indictment by a grand jury by Friday, Sept 29, 2023, at the earliest,” adding, “The Government intends to seek the return of an indictment in this case before that date.”
This filing was submitted in response to a court order requesting a status update on the case by September 6, 2023.
At this time, the specific charges that Hunter Biden may face remain undisclosed.
In August, the plea deal between Hunter Biden and Weiss fell apart when it faced scrutiny from the judge, causing complications in the previously agreed-upon arrangement.
The initial agreement had allowed Hunter Biden to plead guilty to failure to pay taxes on over $1.5 million in income for 2017 and 2018, resulting in probation rather than incarceration.
Furthermore, Weiss had devised a separate diversion agreement that granted Hunter Biden immunity from potential future charges, including a provision to expunge a felony gun violation from his record.
Hunter Biden’s legal team argued for the preservation of the terms of the “diversion agreement” within the plea deal and contended that Weiss should honor the unusual agreement, asserting that the government had “backtracked” on a “previously agreed-upon Plea Agreement.”
