US emphasizes importance of unbiased Taiwan elections, regardless of outcome

The senior US diplomat in Taipei, Sandra Oudkirk, has stressed the significance of ensuring that Taiwan’s upcoming 2024 election remains free from external interference. In a speech at National Taiwan University, Oudkirk reiterated the United States’ enduring commitment to the island, emphasizing that Washington’s policy towards Taiwan will remain consistent, irrespective of the election outcome.

President Tsai Ing-wen and other Taiwanese officials have expressed concerns about potential interference by China in the upcoming Jan. 13 presidential and parliamentary elections. The results of this election could significantly impact Taiwan’s relations with its neighbor.

Despite lacking formal diplomatic ties, the United States stands as Taiwan’s most crucial international supporter and arms supplier. Oudkirk assured confidence in Taiwan’s electoral processes and democratic system, emphasizing that the decision-making process lies with the Taiwanese voters without external influence.

“We believe it is for the Taiwan voters to decide their next leader, free from outside interference,” Oudkirk stated. She reiterated the US stance of not taking sides in Taiwan’s election, emphasizing the support for Taiwan’s vibrant democracy and expressing readiness to collaborate with any leaders elected by Taiwanese voters in 2024.

In the upcoming election, the Democratic Progressive Party’s Lai Ching-te, the current vice president, is considered the frontrunner based on opinion polls. However, China views Lai as a separatist, complicating bilateral relations.

Lai’s main rival is Hou Yu-ih from the Kuomintang, Taiwan’s largest opposition party, which traditionally leans towards closer ties with China. Despite this, the party denies being pro-Beijing and asserts its commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with the United States.

Over the past four years, China has increased military pressure on Taiwan, conducting large-scale war games near the island. The US reaffirms its dedication to Taiwan’s democratic process and stands firm on its neutral stance in the upcoming election.
